Beaded Quilt Fundraising Project

This is our latest joint creative beading project.

What we did ...

We created two beaded ‘quilts’ or wall hangings, one on each of the themes of Spring and Autumn.  They are constructed of  212 beaded squares, each measuring 5x5 cm (2x2 “), mounted on a fabric backing.

Members taking part in the project were provided with pale yellow beads (Spring) and bronze beads (Autumn).  All the other colours were added by the participants in keeping with their designs.

The team that made the quilts

A huge ‘thank you’ to everybody involved in making the quilts.

First, Jenny Wilson and Sue Maguire organised the project for us, from choosing the unifying beads and background fabric to administering the paperwork, including recording the squares photographically as they arrived.

A lovely 143 members contributed squares (some enjoyed it so much, they did two).  They did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of Spring and Autumn with their designs.

The all-important construction was done by Jenny Wilson, Sue Maguire, Sylvia Fairhurst, Carolyn Whenman and, most importantly, Margaret Budd who did all the machining and hand sewn edges.  Here is a photograph of Margaret working on the Spring Quilt.

The finished quilts

Here are the finished Spring and Autumn Bead Quilts. (Two squares which went missing for a while are now found and have been added to the Spring Quilt.  A revised photograph including them will be here shortly.)

Autumn Quilt

The Quilts were first exhibited at the Great British Bead Show in May 2011.  They were then displayed on the Guild stand at the shows we attended around the country through the summer and autumn.    Both quilts are now on display at Stitchncraft through December.Spring Quilt

What next?

The Spring and Autumn Bead Quilts are to be raffled.  The draws will take place on 20 December at Stitchncraft at 12.30.  There will be mulled wine and mine pies to make it a festive occasion.

Send raffle ticket requests and counterfoils to: The Beadworkers Guild,  4 Honor Oak Road, London SE23 3SF.
